Google Earth puts a planet's worth of imagery and other geographic information right on your desktop. It is one of the most phenomenal pieces of software I have ever seen, truly unbelievable. View any part of the world (yes really) at any altittude with many parts of the world so detailed you can see cars and people walking (partiuclarly in the cities).

Mashing is combining data with Google Earth; the first mashup imported Chicago house prices and presented them visually in Google Earth. Today many more things are possible. I have created a layer which displays where I took the photos and a brief description. Where the placeholder is is exactly where I stood and I have aligned the photos so that they are pointing in the direction I took the photo.

Sound interesting?

You need Google Earth to view it. You also need broadband. Google Earth is free and if you have never used it then get it now and get ready to gawp.

With Google Earth installed on your computer, all you need to do is download this layered map. Once it has finished downloading, open it and Google Earth should automatically start up.

Some pointers on how to use Google Earth:

1. Look on the left to the red places tab. Double click on which picture you want to see and you will fly there.

2. At the bottom of places you will see a slider, use this to make the selected picture (select it in the places tab) become transparent so you can see what is underneath.

3. To the right of the slider is a play button, this means Google Earth will play through the show and take you from place to place!

4. Either side of the cross navigation device at the bottom (with the 4 arrows pointing up, left, down, right) are two buttons with circular arrows. Use these to rotate.

5. Zoom in as much as you want!

Have fun!
